When A Credit Card Can Help You Keep Your Budget

When you make large purchases, like an appliance or car repair, you can try to use a cash advance or a credit card to close the gap in your budget. While the cash advance will fill in a short-term gap, there are some hidden ways that a credit card can help you maintain your budget should you end up having further problems down the road with the same purchase.

Extended Warranties

For one thing, if you need an appliance or repair to last a long time, you generally buy an extended warantee. If you pay for your purchase with a credit card, you automatically get some extended warranties, saving you some money now and some potential financial disasters later. So, instead of automatically assuming you have to buy it, check with your credit card issuer first. Some credit card companies like American Express and Master Card will even double the original warranty period for free. There are some limits on the extension, typically up to a year.

Price Protection

Ever have that sinking feeling seeing some recent purchase going for 10 to 20% less at another store. Regardless of the amount of money you have overspent, you can often get some price protection on your purchase if you use your credit card to make the purchase. There are some restrictions here too, mostly that it doesn't apply to online prices. However, even then, you can get up to $250 refunded if you can prove that you've found the item at a cheaper price at some other retail store. You do have to make a claim with the credit card company within 60 days of the purchase.
